Liquid feed linked to second baby death
Suspected bacterial contamination of liquid feed claims second life.
A second baby has succumbed to blood poisoning, thought to be linked to contaminated liquid feed used in hospitals.
Twenty-two babies are being treated for blood poisoning in connection with the outbreak.
As the number of cases rose, the company that makes the feed said a single ingredient was thought to be the cause of the infection.
The feed is delivered into the bloodstream via drip when newborns are unable to eat by themselves. All the babies developed septicaemia (blood poisoning) from the feed, which was contaminated with bacteria.
The second death comes after nine-day-old Yousef al-Kharboush died at an intensive care unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London on Sunday June 1.
